Armor in P&P is pretty detailed in terms of grades. Tony seemed to include everything under the sun and assumed that the reason one would take one piece of armor over another was specifically related to its battlefield application. I, personally think that armor can be more generalized. I like the idea that a shield makes you "one better" than no shield. It essentially lets you fight as if you had armor. My proposed idea is to have some general grades of armor.
No Armor 6+
Body armor or shield 5+
Body armor and shield or Early Plate Armor 4+
Early Plate armor and Shield or "White Harness" 3+
All saves can be modified based on attacking weapon if you think there is a need.
Body armor could be any form of substantial armor from Lino-thorax to chain mail. The idea is that most folks would choose chain mail over lino-thorax because of both durability and comfort. Chain mail breathes where lino-thorax is a solid piece of thick material. Chain mail holds up to the elements better than lino-thorax or leather or any other sort of cloth/leather based armor. All armor of this class, however, would provide about the same amount of protection.
Early plate is the breastplate and arm pieces over chain. White harness is full plate armor. at this point the shield is discarded because it does not provide any more protection than the full plate armor does.
I use this system now in some rules I've written and it works pretty well. It would "bolt on" to P&P pretty easily and stream line things a bit.
Let em know what you think.
